Van Gogh, all our paintings - exhibition design

The Kröller-Müller Museum holds 88 paintings by Vincent van Gogh, most of them acquired between 1908 and 1930 by its founder, Helene Kröller-Müller. In this exhibition, every one is presented through the three divine virtues: Faith, Love and Hope, in that order. These themes run through Van Gogh’s life and work alike. From his own struggles, he sought to create art that would comfort others.

This thematic approach reveals his work anew. Unexpected pairings invite visitors to look again, with fresh eyes. We created a light, vulnerable setting in which some paintings seem to float in space. Soft, pale background colours cradle the works in a tender, loving atmosphere and let the powerful collection shine in its own right. Hope, deliberately, has the final word: we reserved it for the close of the exhibition.
