Ode to Amrita Sher-Gil – Masterpieces from Dutch Museums

On March 22, 2026, the Drents Museum was set to open the exhibition Amrita Sher-Gil – Europe belongs to Picasso, India belongs to me. The show was to feature around 60 works from this intriguing Indian/Hungarian artist on loan from the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. However, due to last-minute geopolitical developments, it was decided that the collection could not travel to the Netherlands. In response, museums from across the Netherlands stepped in, generously lending works to ensure the exhibition could still take place.

Our scenography is based on the original design for the postponed exhibition and has been thoughtfully adapted to accommodate the newly selected works. Its flexibility has proven both versatile and resilient. A striking feature of the exhibition is a 30-meter-long paper screen, from which Amrita’s name has been cut. As light passes through, it casts her shadow across the space, creating a subtle yet powerful sense of her presence throughout the exhibition.
