Museum Catharijne Convent, Utrecht
Between Heaven and War – Exhibition Design
This exhibition showcases the finest modernist masterpieces from the interwar period. Featuring remarkable works by renowned artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Charley Toorop, and Max Beckmann, it highlights how artists in the 1920s and 1930s sought meaning and innovation, with religion and spirituality playing a surprisingly significant role in their creative journey.
To honor the art in its purest form, we intentionally separated the political context from the works themselves. The exhibition unfolds in four stages, each introduced by colorful, graphic antechambers. The art is displayed in an expansive space, inviting visitors to experience it at their own pace. Some works are accompanied by monographs on the selected artists, offering deeper insights into their lives and practices.
