Caesar van Everdingen: grand master of Dutch Classicism. Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar presents the artist’s first monographic exhibition four hundred years after his birth. It is about time for a reassessment of this impressive oeuvre, which experts consider among the best of seventeenth-century art. Like no other, Van Everdingen used his ‘flattering brush’ to capture on canvas the softness of velvet, the sleekness of fur and the sheen of fabrics, which resulted in impressive history paintings and civic guard portraits.
The sensuality of the works is one of the leading principles in the exhibition design; there is a tremendous soft, powdery translucency and transparency in the space through colours and screens, and there are many see-through vistas. As the visitor walks through the spaces, the exhibition slowly unveils itself.
The museum won the prestigious Turing Award II for the exhibition concept.
